The Life of Eco-Friendly Linen

Posted on September 3, 2010 · Leave a Comment

Linen cloths and products are some of the most beautiful and timeless pieces that one can add to their home collection, yet as much as people run to a linen table cloth or napkin for a dinner party, just as many tend to shy away due to lack of experience or fear of having another high maintenance piece to care for.

There are endless ways to utilize linen in a home and of course a long list of care suggestions for proper stain removal, cleaning, and storage. I would like to add a few other eco-friendly tips that may sway to you consider linen over cotton for the next time you dress your table.

•For countless generations, linen has been highly valued for its soft hand, durability, practicality and comfort. Produced from the flax plant, linen is non-pilling and impressively absorbent, which makes it ideal for drying dishes, mopping up spills and wiping countertops.

•Flax grows with minimal chemicals, no irrigation and little waste and the processing of the natural fiber requires very little energy and has minimal impact on the environment.

•Linen is also a natural and eco-friendly fabric that is both recyclable and biodegradable, making it a smart choice for today’s home.

•Linen is machine washable and becomes soft to the touch after only one washing. To return the crispness, one needs only to pull out the iron. It is a perfect fabric for both large and small uses in the home and can be tastefully accented with vintage style touches or dressed up with beautiful embroidery.

We found another amazing set from a Nancy Meyers’ film. “It’s Complicated” was released in 2009 and centered around the Spanish-style ranch in Santa Barbara where Meryl Streep’s character Jane lived in.

The house that always looked so warm and cozy, was created by Production Designer Jon Hutman, who also worked some of our other favorite sets like “The Holiday,” and “Something’s Gotta Give.”

The sets interiors were sophisticated with a little California casual influence.

Our favorite room was the kitchen, according to Traditional Home, the overall design direction for Jane’s kitchen in the movie came directly from Nancy Meyers, “who wanted a ‘Belgian’ look that is reflected in the house’s furnishings and a quiet palette with natural linen.”

Bonus Fun Fact:  Nancy Meyers said, “The Santa Barbara movie we filmed in New York.” The house they used for exterior shots was in Los Angeles (Santa Barbara is too expensive for filming), and the interiors for the house were built on a soundstage in Brooklyn.
